DEDICATION

This booklet is dedicated to those of the Masonic Order, living or dead, who in any way contributed to the success of Greenup Lodge No. 125 A.F. & A.M. in the past one hundred years.

And also to those future masons who will carry on the tradition of our order. We trust that they will rule and govern the lodge with the regularity necessary for the success of any institution.

HISTORY OF GREENUP LODGE NO. 125
A.F. & A.M.

One hundred years ago, a group of Master Masons saw the opportunity and the necessity for forming a Masonic Lodge in this vicinity. On October 3, 1853, a group of nine received a charter from the Grand Lodge of Illinois. These charter members were as follows: Thomas Coulson, S.W. Huffcutt, Charles Nisewanger, A.K. Bosworth, S.W. Quinn, E. Talbott, M. Ruffner, John Grayson and John Armstrong.

Thomas Coulson served as the first Master of this newly instituted lodge. Facts and data in connection with these first meetings and members are not clear. According to the records of 1855, Brother Thomas Coulson made a series of Masonic lectures; therefore, supporting the thought that he was indeed an ardent and conscientious Mason, and spent his time in furthering the Brotherhood of Masonry.

At the close of the first year, the names of 18 more members appeared on the roll of membership. These first meetings were held at the S.W. Quinn residence, and on April 26, 1855, the Bible and record book were presented to the lodge, and are still held in its possession today. Dues for membership were $1.40 per year and were later raised to $2.00 and at present time members pay the sum of $5.00 per year.

January 1860, the Lodge moved to the James Ewart Hall, and later to the Monohon building which was partially destroyed by fire June 12, 1888.

The Charter was destroyed and the Grand Master declared the hall unsafe as a meeting place.

Space was rented from Atalanta Lodge I.O.O.F. and a new Charter procured. There the Masons carried on their work until January 8, 1923, when the present Masonic building was purchased from W.O. Denman. After much redecorating it has provided a suitable meeting place for Greenup Lodge No. 125 A.F. & A.M. and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter NO. 29.

Greenup Lodge has a distinction that perhaps no other lodge in the state can claim. This lodge was indirectly associated in name with Western Star Lodge No. 27 organized in September 1805 at Kaskaskia, Indian territory, which was the first lodge organized in what is now the State of Illinois of which W.C. Greenup was a member, and the Worshipful Master in 1813. Brother Greenup assisted in the organizing of the first Grand Lodge in Illinois at Vandalia in 1822. Brother Greenup was a civil engineer and owned the land on which the town of Greenup is now located. He operated the mill in Greenup and furnished the lumber to build the first bridge across the river west of Greenup when the Cumberland road was built from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois in 1822.

Greenup Lodge is proud of the fact that it recommended and helped institute Prairie City Lodge No. 578, Hazel Dell Lodge No. 580, and Toledo Lodge No. 834. Not only did this Order help further Masonry by instituting other Lodges, but by greatly contributing to the relief of many distressed Master Masons, their widows and orphans.

Not only did the Lodge contribute to the building of the George Washington Memorial, but notably contributed to the Chicago Relief fund, resulting from the fire of 1871 and to the Pennsylvania flood victims in 1889.

The Lodge is equally proud of the fact that it has three living "fifty year" members on its roll of membership:

James M. Underwood who was made a Mason on December 29, 1891, giving him the distinction of being the oldest living member - a mason 62 years. He has been a loyal supporter of the Order;

Brother C.M. Kelly who was made a member of Casey Lodge No. 442 in 1897 and transferred to Greenup Lodge in 1907;

Brother A.T. Brady who was made a mason July 12, 1900 and served the lodge in the capacity of secretary and treasurer for a number of years.

On of the most rare and valuable items owned by the lodge is a gavel made from the stones taken from King Solomon Quarry in Jerusalem. It was brought to this country and presented to the Greenup lodge by Arthur R. Mitchell, brother of the present Worshipful Master.

Our greatest hope is that the future history of this lodge will be comparable to the history of our first one hundred years.
